From today, Saturday 1st August, it is necessary to wear a face covering in all indoor public spaces.
Many establishments will enforce this at the entrance or display notices outside but they are not obliged to. Local police will be carrying out spot checks to ensure compliance and a fine of €150 will apply to every person not wearing a face covering – anecdotal evidence locally suggests that this has been happening already.
It is a small price to pay for the privilege of being able to take a sunshine holiday in the middle of a global pandemic and just bear in mind that workers in stores have to wear a face mask all day in the heat or potentially face fines and/or having their establishment closed for a period of time. Outdoor bars and tavernas are of course exempt from this piece of legislation.
It is the swift implementation of containment laws such as this, which makes Greece the only European sunshine/beach destination that British visitors can at present travel to without having to quarantine upon returning to the UK. Please do your bit to help keep Greece safe and open this summer.
